The Mother Road is about to celebrate its 100th birthday! US Route 66 was officially established on November 11 of 1926. Over the decades, this iconic highway helped enable the early development of our great country and rooted itself deep in the history and the hearts of Americans.

Rt. 66 has become not just one of our Nation’s greatest tourist attractions, but a “bucket list item” for thousands of travelers worldwide. Although the original route has been realigned several times and greatly affected by the Interstate Highway system, over five million Americans live, work and operate businesses along both the old and new alignments.

In recognition of the importance and popularity of the highway, the Route 66 Centennial Commission Act was proposed in 2018 and signed in to law on December 23, 2020. The Commission’s purpose is to raise funds to promote, preserve and develop the road. Through the efforts of the Commission and a host of representatives and volunteers in each state along the route, 2022 will kick off a four-year celebration. Events will be held across the country, from Chicago to Santa Monica, culminating with the 100-year anniversary Festival on November 11, 2026.

The State of Texas is gearing up to celebrate and our Texas Old Route 66 Association is providing this site to keep you up to date on the happenings!
